Global Vase III at Container Terminal Amsterdam-West, h. 155 cm, collection Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, 2009

These ‘Global Vases’ have been inspired by a fascination for folk art, coming from many countries world wide. During generations motifs and patterns, originating from the rich traditions within Arab, Persian and Japanese cultures, inventive and powerful in their simplicity and abundance, were handed over from parent to child. A choice of these patterns is re-used on these huge vases, manufactured by Chinese craftsmen. The well defined shape is offering an excellent canvas for the semi-abstract depictions, which wind themselves around the vase, presenting a different view at each  side.
